Jatiya Party hits turbulence over GS appointment

There is a lot of conflict and disagreement among the most senior leaders of the Jatiya Party over the post of secretary general. It was vacant since Ziauddin Ahmad Bablu died on Saturday.

Bablu was initially appointed Secretary General in the year 2014 by then chairman of the party HM Ershad Bablu, who was removed in the year 2016.

In the past year, Chairman General Manager Quader appointed Bablu secretary general once again following removal of Moshiur Rahman Ranga out of the position.

JP insiders say that several senior leaders have expressed interest in this job.

However, it was learned from sources in the party that the leadership of the party wants to award it to a relatively young person with a positive image both inside and outside of the parliament.

Sources within JP reported that party top-level officials are considering the Additional Secretary General (Rangpur Division) and JP lawmaker (Gaibandha-1) Shameem Haider Patwari for the position of secretary general.

As the news broke within the party, some of its senior leaders met with party co-chairman Kazi Firoz Rashid , on the Monday.

They expressed their anger about the choice to name Patwari as secretary general of the JP, an JP leader who was present at the meeting said to The Daily Star yesterday.

The JP leader wished to remain anonymous. the JP leader stated that the senior leaders who attended the meeting were in favor of appointing one to the position as secretary general.

JP Co-chairmen ABM and Ruhul Amin Hawlader Moshiur Rahman Ranga Mujibul Haque Chunnu Syed Abu Hossain Babla, Additional Secretary General (Khulna) Shahidur Rahman, Presidium Member Shafiqul Islam and Advisory Council member Zahirul Alam were among those attending the meeting.

"Many senior leaders came to my office after news spread that Shameem Haider Patwari may be made secretary general of the party. They expressed their disappointment and anger," Firoz Rashid told different media outlets on Monday.

"Shameem Haider Patwari has been in Jatiya Party politics for two or three years. If he is made secretary general, the senior leaders will not accept him," an experienced JP leader, who preferred not to be identified the name, told The Daily Star.

According to sources in the party two former secretaries general Ruhul Amin Hawawlader as well as Moshiur Rahman Ranga Syed Abu Hossain Babla, lawmaker from Dhaka-4 (Shyampur-Demra) The Additional Secretary General Shahidur Rahman and Shameem Haider Patwari have expressed interest in becoming Secretary General of the principal opposition.

JP chairman GM Quader told different media outlets on Monday that the job as secretary general was an administrative position in the party . According to the constitution of JP, it is a subordinate position to the post as chief patron or co-chairman.

"I don't understand why the co-chairmen of the party are so greedy for this position."

Sources from the party said Shameem has attracted attention due to his participation in parliament as well as his knowledgeable speeches in parliament and out on a range of subjects.

"Young voters may be attracted to Jatiya Party if he is made the secretary general. The party's image may also improve as he is a clean-image politician," said one JP Presidium Member.

With these considerations In light of these, considering these aspects, JP high-levels are contemplating having him as secretary general, the JP leader has said he would prefer not to be identified.

General Manager Quader explained that in accordance with the Article 20/1 (1) A of the constitution of the party The chairman has the authority to nominate any person to the position Secretary General.
